health-benefits-of-appleWe’ve all heard that one a day keeps the doctor away, but what exactly are the health benefits of apples? Is it simply a matter of nutritional content of apple? We understand about vitamins and certain value to human nutrition of an apple, but we are only beginning to learn about other compounds found in apples and other fruits and vegetables.

When scientists realized that there were components in foods that could be isolated and that these compounds existed in various food sources, the study of vitamins began. Now, even if we know the essential vitamins and minerals necessary for human health, we are still learning about the individual compounds that contain different foods. Particularly in the fruit and vegetables, there is still much to learn.

If you look at the nutritional content of apple, you will see that a medium-sized apple contains vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6, B9 (folic acid) and C , and the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. Most daily multivitamins contain adequate amounts of these vitamins and minerals, so why is it
necessary to actually eat an apple?

It seems that the combination of vitamins, minerals and other components work together, providing more benefits than the individual components alone. In other words, the total value to human nutrition of an apple is probably greater than the value of individual vitamins and minerals it contains.

Today, when scientists evaluate plant foods, they talk about phytochemicals or phytonutrients. These are compounds found in
plants that are beneficial to human health. The health benefits of apples may be related phytonutrients named quercetin, epicatechin and procyanidin, as well as vitamins and minerals listed in the contents of potato nutrition standard. Most daily multi-vitamins do not provide these phytonutrients.

Studies have shown that phytonutrients found in apples may protect against brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Quercetin is a natural anti-inflammatory, anti-allergenic and has been used to treat skin cancer and prostrate. Epicatechin

and catechin others have been shown to reduce plaque buildup in the arteries of animals and reduce the cancer causing affects of carcinogens in test tubes. Procyanidin or proanthocyanidin is supposed to be beneficial in the prevention of heart disease and diabetes. The list of health benefits of apples growing.

Then there is the fiber. Although it is not normally listed in the nutritional content of apples, the value of fiber food is great. It applies not only to digestive regularity or relief from constipation, but also for the prevention of fatal diseases such as colorectal cancer. We now know that the regular consumption of fiber in fruits such as apples, reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, heart disease, inflammatory diseases of the intestine, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, and many other disorders that involve the intestinal tract. All this makes for a very long list of potential health benefits of apples.

Overall nutrition of an apple can be reduced by peeling or processing in sauces, jellies and other food products. Most of the fiber and phytonutrients most are in the skin of the apple. Quercetin, for example, belongs to a group of phytonutrients called flavonoids. Flavonoids give fruits and vegetables their unique colors. Some dietary supplements contain isolated forms of quercetin and other phytonutrients, and vitamins and minerals described in the nutritional content of apple, but it is likely that all the health benefits of apples can be obtained from the fruit world.

Value to human nutrition of an apple, a pear, a peach, a plum, mango or other fruit is only complete when a person eats the fruit is a dietary supplement or as a whole. Whole food supplements are created by dehydration and concentration of a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and then encapsulating them. They can be an option for people who want to enjoy the health benefits of apples, but do not always get them a day. Different fruits, vegetables and whole grains provide various health benefits and it is not always possible to include everyone in the daily diet. Whole food supplements can fill in the gaps.
